Bringing Significant Chinese Research into English Publication

Chinese-language scholarship encompasses a substantial body of original research. Some of this work has appeared as monographs, doctoral dissertations, or series of articles; other work has taken shape through long-term fieldwork, archival research, curatorial practice, artistic practice, and social observation.

Language is the most immediate boundary such work encounters on its way into international discussion. The boundary also extends to argumentative structure, conceptual background, scholarly convention, and reader expectations. Bringing a Chinese-language book into English publication often requires a fresh examination of its central questions, a reorganization of its materials and argument, and the establishment of the historical and intellectual context a new readership will need.

Time Commons Press／怀远书局 works within this process. We seek Chinese research of lasting value and work with authors to shape books suited to English-language academic publishing.

Our initial publishing program focuses on:

• Art history and visual culture
• Curatorial studies, museum studies, and cultural studies
• Chinese studies and related humanities disciplines
• Interdisciplinary research grounded in sustained fieldwork and practice

We are especially interested in work that brings new material, perspectives, and methods to international discussion.

Chinese-Language Publishing for International Markets

English-language publishing is the principal focus of Time Commons Press／怀远书局. For selected projects with a clear scholarly, documentary, or readership rationale, we also publish Chinese-language editions for international markets.

Such editions may be appropriate when the original Chinese manuscript has no formal publication, when an authoritative Chinese text is needed for collection by international libraries, when there is a defined readership among Chinese-speaking communities outside China, or when Chinese and English editions need to be prepared within a shared editorial framework. A Chinese-language edition may preserve a newly organized and corrected research text while providing a reliable textual and terminological basis for an English edition.

Each proposed Chinese-language edition is evaluated on its own terms. We consider the work's intellectual value, rights status, existing editions, intended readership, and practical conditions. Where a mature Chinese edition already exists, a new international edition must offer substantial editorial or documentary value.

Publishing Begins with Editorial Judgment

Every project begins with reading and evaluation. We consider the questions the research raises, the distinctiveness of its material, the completeness of its argument, and the contribution it could make within English-language scholarly publishing.

For a book already published in Chinese, the work may include positioning the English edition, restructuring chapters, adding or removing content, and supplying context. A doctoral dissertation usually requires a reconsideration of readership, length, and argumentative pace. A project arising from fieldwork, archives, or long-term practice may begin with organizing material, identifying the central question, and establishing the manuscript's structure.

Translation is an integral part of this process. Academic concepts, historical experience, and specific materials require sustained attention to meaning, context, and argument as they move between languages. Depending on the project, the work may take the form of a complete translation, cross-lingual writing undertaken with the author, or a combination of translation and rewriting in English.

English-language academic editing continues throughout the shaping of the manuscript. It addresses linguistic accuracy, the clarity of the argument, the relationship between chapters, the sufficiency of background information, and the work's capacity to be understood and assessed independently by its intended readers.

The path of each project is determined by its materials, the author's circumstances, and the aims of publication.

Beginning with a Small List

Time Commons Press／怀远书局 is currently preparing its first publishing projects. At this stage, our work centers on establishing a reliable editorial and cross-lingual publishing method, then testing and refining it through a small number of books.

We set no annual target for the number of titles published. Project selection depends on the quality of the research, its value in English publication, the condition of the existing materials, and our editorial capacity. Confirmed projects will be announced individually with their title, author, description, format, and status.

Our first list will consist primarily of English-language monographs. It may also include Chinese-language editions for international markets, bilingual publications, and related research materials. Print and digital editions will be planned according to readership, use, and distribution conditions.

Current Editorial Directions

Chinese Scholarship in English Translation

This direction covers academic works already published in Chinese or substantially complete in manuscript. Editorial work includes positioning the English edition, structural revision, translation, English-language academic editing, and preparation for publication.

Chinese-Language Publishing for International Markets

This direction covers Chinese-language works with a clear rationale for publication outside China, including research without a formal edition, projects requiring an authoritative Chinese text, and works suited to collection and use by international libraries and Chinese-speaking readers abroad. Editorial work may include organizing materials, structural revision, textual editing, an editorial note on the edition, and preparation of bibliographic metadata.

Research Cultivation

This direction is intended for sustained research supported by substantial materials but not yet formed into a complete monograph. A project may begin with a doctoral dissertation, a series of articles, fieldwork materials, archives, or records of practice.

Art History in Formation

This direction follows contemporary art and cultural practices whose significance is still taking shape and has yet to be adequately documented or discussed. Research, interviews, archival work, and writing conducted alongside the practice preserve primary materials and critical judgments for future scholarship.

Sealtan Writing

This direction preserves texts, materials, and critical judgments at a particular moment, then reopens them at an agreed time or under agreed conditions. The distance between the two moments of writing, along with the changes in understanding that occur during the interval, forms part of the work's method and content.

These editorial directions provide a structure for our first list. Works of clear scholarly value that call for a distinct mode of publication may also be evaluated individually.

Propose a Project

Time Commons Press／怀远书局 is currently working on a limited number of publishing projects. We welcome inquiries concerning Chinese scholarship grounded in sustained research, aligned with our current publishing directions, and intended for an English-language book or a Chinese-language edition for international markets.

Materials we can evaluate include:

• Published Chinese-language academic monographs
• Complete or nearly complete Chinese-language manuscripts
• Doctoral dissertations with the potential to become books
• Series of articles arising from a coherent program of research
• Long-term field research and research archives
• Research in art history, curatorial studies, and visual culture
• Interdisciplinary research grounded in long-term practice
• Chinese-language works with clear documentary value or an identifiable international readership

For an initial inquiry, please provide a brief project summary including:

4. Form, language, and length of the existing materials
5. Table of contents, abstract, and one representative chapter
6. Author CV and relevant publications
7. Publication details for any Chinese edition, if applicable

We will undertake an initial reading in light of our current editorial scope and capacity. Projects with a clear basis for further discussion will proceed to a follow-up conversation.

The initial evaluation considers the research, its publishing potential, and the conditions for collaboration. Formal acceptance requires further reading, confirmation of the scope of work, a rights review, and a written agreement.

From Chinese Research to an English Book

Reading

Understanding the background of the research, the work already completed, the range of materials, and the questions the author seeks to address.

Evaluation

Assessing the research's scholarly contribution, its international relevance, its intended readers, and the work required to bring it into English publication.

Positioning

Determining the subject range, readership, length, and basic publication format of the English book.

Structuring

Revising the manuscript's structure, adding necessary materials, and working through chapter relationships, the course of the argument, and contextual explanation.

Writing and Translation

Undertaking translation, cross-lingual writing, or rewriting in English as the project requires, while addressing conceptual and contextual differences throughout the process.

Review and Editing

Arranging specialist review, external comment, or peer review, and completing substantive editing, English-language editing, proofreading, and author revisions.

Design and Publication

Completing book design and production, ISBN assignment, bibliographic metadata, print or digital editions, and legal deposit in Canada.

Process:

Time Commons Press／怀远书局 was founded in Ottawa, Canada, in 2025 as the academic publishing arm of Time Commons.

The press draws on more than two decades of research, curatorial practice, artistic practice, writing, and international exchange, continuing a line of work formed through AARC, vibrARTion, and Time Commons.

Time Commons Press／怀远书局 is currently assembling its first list. Our principal work is to identify Chinese scholarship with international publishing value and transform it into English-language books through sustained editorial and cross-lingual work. For selected projects with a clear scholarly, documentary, or readership rationale, the press also publishes Chinese-language editions for international markets.

Time Commons Press is the press's English name, and 怀远书局 its Chinese name. The press operates under VibrARTion Holdings Ltd., registered in Ottawa, Canada. It uses Canadian ISBNs assigned through ISBN Canada and manages publication metadata and legal deposit in accordance with applicable requirements.
